Being injured or hurt sucks. But you need to know 2 things if you are battling injuries I feel.
1)- There is a difference between injured & hurt. Football is a tough game. People who play football and play it at a high level are extremely tough individuals. Physically & mentally. If you have a lightly sprained ankle or a little discomfort in your shoulder etc. that’s being hurt. NOT injured. You should play through it. That’s just the way I was coached in this game and I feel more athletes need to hear that. I’ve played with bruised ribs, broken fingers, hurt back & sprained ankles before. You’re not your best- but think of it like this- if you’re in high school you have 40 games generally (not counting playoffs) to make a name for yourself and get college attention. The more games you miss the more likely you’re not going to get an offer or recruiting attention. Now injuries are where you need to rest. Concussions, knee injuries etc. Those are times where you need to sit out, however that brings me to point number 2.
2)- If you’re injured, I’m sure a worry of yours is losing your spot. And thats normal. I played on a high school team that would honestly make players feel bad about being injured. A guy had 3 concussions in 5 games- and the coaches thought he was faking it. He wasn’t. And they treated him very poorly. That culture isn’t good for the game. But coaches are annoyed a little bit when players are out. What you need to do is make sure you show up to everything so you don’t fall behind mentally. Be at every practice (unless you’re getting treatment). When you’re getting treatment explain to coaches you won’t be there but ask them what you’re missing. Be at lifting. Be at team meetings. Show that you want to be there. It shows your leadership but also shows coaches you want to still be there. Which is essential if you want your job back when you get healthy.
