Now this is a common thing debated in the athletic world, but I would say if you are around 6th grade that is a good time to start lifting. I think at 3rd-5th grade doing body weight exercises is best. It can develop a good frame and proper form on exercises. Doing air squats, lunges, push ups and any type of core work is great for any athlete. In 6th-7th grade I recommend lifting but focusing all on technique. You are not going to lift heavy weight. For example on an exercise like barbell back squat- you should be doing just the bar or extremely light weight depending on your strength level. Get the form down. Having a good foundation of form will allow you to lift heavier and put on more muscle as you get older. When you progress to 8th grade- you can add some more weight but form should be your number one priority. Athletes in my opinion shouldn’t lift heavy until high school. A lot of people say lifting will “stunt your growth”… there is absolutely no science behind that and can’t be proven. I say to wait because of injuries. You don’t want a bad muscle strain or tear in your key development years.
