One of the biggest scams out there in high school/youth football is the “recruiting agent” or “recruiting guru” guys who claim they can help anybody get offers. We are going to talk about the recruiting “agents” you want to avoid and how you guys can be more careful with your time and money this off season. I hope this helps!

So I’m sure there are some “recruiting agents” that mean well. They genuinely want to help people get to the next level, regardless if colleges respect them and regardless if colleges actually use their services or not. But there are some guys out there who straight up just want to take parents’ money and those are the ones we will be discussing. We are going to give you easy signs to identify these scam artists and you can easily avoid them. Now, I don’t know if you knew this, but you can legitimately pay for a D1,D2, D3 etc. verbal offer. Let me say that again… you can pay for an offer. It is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of and a lot of these “recruiting agents” bank on this type of thing. Let me explain. So some of these recruiting guys claim they are “well connected” or have “connections” but really they just know a couple of assistant coaches on college staffs. Usually assistant coaches don’t even have the jurisdiction to give a legitimate offer. They have to clear the offer with a coordinator or the head coach. But again, it’s a verbal offer, so nobody is binded to anything. Any offer that you receive is essentially a verbal offer. These are legitimate ones and the fake ones we are discussing here. Nothing is legit until you sign on signing day. Either party can back out anytime. Even if you give the school a verbal commitment. So here lies the scam… what these recruiting guys do is they charge parents let’s say the number is $5,000- they will take $2,000 and pay some inside linebacker assistant coach to give one of their “guys” a verbal offer. So the kid can post it on Twitter and the recruiting agent will justify it and say “oh it’s going to get you attention from other schools so they will offer & look at you”. So the recruiting agent thinks he looks like a hero & he just profited $3,000 for essentially nothing. Which is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. If you’re not good enough and you land a fake offer from a school, don’t you think the other school who wasn’t paid will be able to tell that you’re not that good? I know of a dude down here in Southern California who gets kids (who don’t have any varsity film) these types of offers- how does that make sense? It doesn’t. What makes sense is that the recruiting “agent” is trying to tell you to “fake it until you make it”. The great part about football is that you will always get exposed. Whether that’s positive or negative. So please listen to me on this, avoid any recruiting agent who does this type of thing.
Now, how can you spot this ahead of time before you spend the money? If he’s asking for a lot of money like $5,000-$10,000 I would be apprehensive. I would also ask him questions like who do you currently work with? What offers do they have? Then I would do some research on the athlete and look at his offers on Twitter. Usually what kids do is that when they post an offer, they will tag a coach that gave them the offer. If he plays QB and he got an offer from a graduate assistant or assistant coach at some school and it doesn’t have a correlation with his position… bingo you just found a fake offer. Most assistant coaches need to clear the offer with a head coach or coordinator. Not every single coach can just give out offers like they are candy. So if you follow this process and genuinely ask them questions about who the service is helping CURRENTLY, you can figure this stuff out on your own. They will always say “oh I helped this player go D1”- what does that mean? What can you do for me now? Before you invest this money into the recruiting process, make sure you are absolutely sure.
