Shorter WRs need to focus on adding 3 things to their game or emphasizing these 3 things when they play. Being a shorter guy means that you do not pass the “eye test”. Which essentially means that at a first glance, college coaches do not think you are a recruitable player. These attributes below will help you change their mind.
1)- Speed. You cannot be short and slow. It just will not work at the next level. You need to have some kind of speed and quickness to your game. If you are below 5’11 you are going to play in the slot in college. And slot WRs need speed. So that’s something I highly suggest you work on in the off season. Work on drills for your running mechanics, fast twitch muscle fibers and train with resistance. If you’re at a college camp and you aren’t 6’2+ your speed is the only way you can stand out.
2)- Great hands. Coaches are looking for a reason to pass on a short WR when it comes to recruiting them. And dropping the ball is one of the easiest ways to turn off a coach. You should catch every pass thrown your way and even the difficult ones. This can make you stand out on film too. If you’re willing to go over the middle & catch in traffic despite your height/size, you can stand out to coaches.
3)- Effort. Running your routes full speed, blocking, showing up to every team event/practice etc. Will put you really high on your high school coaches favorite players list. And that is your key for a college coach to take a chance on you. Because when a college coach comes to a high school to recruit players, guess who his first stop is? It’s not your trainer, it’s not the principal, it’s not your 7on7 coach… it’s your high school coach. So if he loves you because of your work ethic, effort and the plays you make… expect him to recommend you to a lot of coaches that come through his door.
