The obvious challenging factor of playing football in Canada is that you do not get a lot of US colleges traveling to your high school to recruit players. So as an individual you have to do a lot of leg work to get yourself noticed and in front of college coaches. There are 3 things that I recommend doing.
1)- This is if you are an 8th grader or younger… find a high school to attend where the head coach has a history of getting guys to college in the US. You want to play for obviously a talented team and you want to go to a high school where you are going to play, but having a well connected head coach makes this process a lot easier. So I would factor that into your decision. Research guys who have gone on to play college ball in the US and look up the high schools they went to.
2)- If you’re already in high school, point #1 doesn’t really matter… but not to worry, you can still get recruited. It’s just more individual work with less help from your high school coach. First step is to have dominant film. To play college football, you have to be good enough. I mean it’s common sense, but a lot of people think they can rig the system without dominant film. Guys, being in Canada gives you a disadvantage- there are some ballers in Canada (I have seen them at my camps) but you aren’t playing as high of level of competition that you will see in US states. So your film that you send to college coaches or post on your Twitter can’t be average. It needs to be dominant. You should stick out amongst a crowd of people. So when a college coach comes across your Twitter account or you message him your film, there is no doubt that you can play football at the next level.
3)- Go to college camps in the closest US states to you. I don’t recommend breaking the bank traveling to every college camp this summer, but if there are camps in states like New York, Washington, Minnesota etc. I would attend. Meet college coaches, get their Twitter info, follow them on Twitter, message them your film and stay in contact with them throughout the season. You have to do these little details if you want any type of attention. Guys, it is possible. It’s not easy, but nothing worth it is easy. All you need is one coach to take a chance. You may have to meet 100 coaches before finding that single guy. But all you need is one.
