So this time of year a lot of athletes get “invites” to college camps. Some athletes think “wow they must have noticed me and want to recruit me” … that can be the case but most of the time it’s not and today we are gong to talk about how you can recognize that.

So if you have never spoken to a specific college coach or anybody from that school and you get an invite to a camp… it’s most likely a mass message that was sent to thousands of kids. Sometimes if you go to like a combine, sign up for a recruiting site or really anything recruiting based…your information gets sold to colleges. So you get added to this email list and they send the same email to thousands of athletes across the country. The reason why colleges do this, is so they can make money. Not all camps are money grabs and they aren’t always bad to attend. Schools that are underfunded rely on the college camps in the summer to pay their staff. If they get 300 kids to pay $200 that’s $60,000 in revenue with very little expenses. And that’s a good chunk of money. Now again, I want to make this clear, it’s not bad to attend these sometimes because you might stand out and get some real recognition. My thing is the expectations. Don’t expect that these coaches know who you are and are watching only you because you got “invited”. A lot of guys got the same “invite” . Some things you can also look for is if there is an “unsubscribe” button at the bottom of the email. That means it is an email marketing list… not a personalized email even if your name is on it. A real camp invite generally comes from coaches you have met, coaches who have watched your film and they follow you on social media. It’s very personalized and you can tell usually. It’s not generally their first DM or email to you. There has been a few emails sent back and forth- then they can invite. I hope this helps with your expectations going into the camp circuit this summer!
