So technically speaking, you cannot receive a

legitimate/committable offer until the summer before your junior year of high school. So any offer you see someone receive before that is all potential based. It’s a verbal agreement which means that nobody is accountable to the agreement. But, that doesn’t mean you should wait until your junior year to start the recruiting process. You should start as early as you can, so what should you focus on?

1)- Making varsity. You cannot get a legit offer without varsity film. So if you’re not on varsity that should be your primary goal. Improve your speed, athleticism, skill work, know your playbook etc. Do everything you can do to get onto a varsity field.

2)- Go to camps to build connections. Every freshman and underclassman should have a Twitter profile. You can follow coaches there and follow the coaches you meet at different camps to stay in touch with them. So when you make varsity, you have contacts to send your film to. You need to plant the seed early with those coaches by attending a camp or meeting them when they come to your school. Always be prepared for this to happen.

3)- Have a great relationship with your high school head coach. He is the first point of contact for a legitimate college coach who recruits. If you have a bad relationship with him, he will not put his reputation on the line for you. So you need to be a team first guy. Show up to everything. Work hard in the gym/on the field. Don’t make excuses and a high school coach will love you. When a college coach visits schools on the recruiting trail this winter- his first stop is the high school head coaches office. You want to make sure you are one of the players he recommends.
