There are honestly 4 specific things I would say that you should try to focus on when getting recruited to play college football as a WR.
)- Speed. I don’t think you can replace speed. On this list, a lot of you will be surprised that “height” or “size” is not on here. Now listen, being tall is certainly beneficial. That is for any position. But if you’re tall & suck… you still suck. This is not basketball this is football. A lack of height can be made up for with speed. So that should be your main focus. You can’t control your height but I feel you can always get faster, quicker, more explosive etc. WRs come in so many sizes. You got slots who are 5’8 and then outside WRs who are 6’5. It all varies but that’s the great part about this position.
)- Big plays on film. Guys, college coaches don’t want to see routine plays. As WRs we are playmakers. We need to make explosive plays and showcase that on our highlight tape. They don’t want to see you catch a wide open pass and walk into the endzone. There are literally thousands of WRs across the country who can do the exact same thing. They want to see you catch a slant, break a tackle, make someone miss etc. and take that to the house. That’s a D1 level highlight. You cannot replace that.
)- Hands. You need to catch everything. Jump balls, catches in traffic, diving catches, catches while getting hit etc. Those are all explosive plays that will stand out to a coach.
)- Route running. In todays college football, what does just about every offense run? Air raid & spread. So that means there are a lot of 1on1 opportunities for separation and to showcase your Route running. So if you can get open easily, you can become a valuable asset for a school recruiting you. Because not a lot of people know how to run routes the right way.
