First things first, you want to avoid anything that will waste your time. And when you are going to recruiting camps, the best use of your time is going to be performing in front of actual decision makers in your recruiting process. AKA college coaches. So if there are no college coaches in attendance… DO NOT GO. You will be severely disappointed and it will be not only a waste of your money but a waste of your time. Let me explain why. Some people may not know this, but colleges invest hundreds of thousands of dollars per year doing their OWN RECRUITING. Flying coaches to different states, paying for hotels, rental cars etc. That adds up. But that’s their process. College coaches are some of the most talented recruiters of all time. They know what they are doing and they know where/who to scout. And they know who will best fit into their offensive/defensive scheme. So why IN THE HELL would they take an exposure camps word over their own? A lot of these camps will say, “oh we are going to send your combine scores out to college coaches” “oh we have xyz college coaches in our network”… these are the biggest wastes of your time. I don’t care if you run a 4.3 40yd dash at this combine/showcase… colleges need to see it with their own eyes. So if college coaches aren’t at the camp, your combine scores & times do not matter one bit.
Now some of you might be thinking that you see certain camps and all of these high level recruits go to their camps and they seem to get offers from them. That’s all a part of the scam in my eyes. A lot of these camps, especially the one sponsored by shock doctor-(you know which one I’m talking about), will let kids show up for free, who are the 3,4,5 star athletes who are already getting D1 attention. They come to the camp, and the camera crew/writers are always following them around. Then they post on their social media “oh after attending xyz camp he has received an offer to xyz school”. Making it seem like he got that from the camp, but in reality he was already getting recruited in the first place. So it tricks parents & kids into thinking that these are well connected people who have college connections. When in fact, they are just in it for the $.
A lot of those camps try to promote it by saying “a representative from xyz recruiting company like rivals or 247 sports” will be at the camp and will be scouting. How is he going to scout 100+ players? One person physically cannot do that. He’s going to scout and write articles about players that he already knows of. Unless someone really really stands out and dominates you will just be another number at the camp. So please do not fall for this. Those recruiting site writers are always going to be there. It’s their job to write articles and make recruiting profiles for the best possible players. So if you perform well on Friday nights and get actual recruiting attention- they will hear about you. They do not need to see you at a camp to give you a ranking. And also, stars/rankings do not matter. It’s a vanity metric. When you get to college, nobody cares how many stars you have. Don’t let the vanity of having stars or getting ranked be your driving force in the off season. Focus on improving so you can actually dominate when it matters. Which is under the bright lifts on Fridays playing varsity ball.
And also, I want to add that if you don’t have varsity film… please don’t go to an exposure camp where there are not any college coaches. Will be really a complete waste of your time.
