So bench press isn’t the most important lift for football players in my opinion. It can help somewhat with blocking, but blocking mainly comes from your hips, legs & explosiveness. Can also help somewhat with tackling. But a lot of schools and programs use bench press as a test of strength. We normally give averages for positions- but honestly if you can BENCH YOUR BODY WEIGHT for a 1 rep max, you’re in a good spot. As you get older that number should go up. But as freshman who are new to lifting, benching your body weight shows that you have good upper body strength. Especially the bigger guys like linemen and TEs. Make sure anytime you bench you are cautious with your form and careful with your shoulder. Always have a spotter if you’re attempting a 1 rep max.
