So first things first… college coaches get literally thousands of direct messages and emails from players/parents across the country. There is a very high likelihood that they still won’t respond but I feel this strategy can help you stand out amongst the crowd.
So why are you DMing or emailing a coach in the first place? You’re doing it to open up a line of communication. I don’t care how good you are, but you won’t message a coach one time with your film and land some type of offer. It might start a process of them looking at you- but you know how many people will send their highlights to these coaches? I mentioned it before… thousands. So I think the best way to open up a line of communication with a college coach is to ask them a question. Introduce yourself, but ask them a quick/brief question that’s easy to answer. And the question I recommend asking is about any camps coming up. Below is what I’d say.
Hey Coach Johnson,My name is Grant Caraway I am a class of 2026 QB and I was wondering if your school had any summer camps this off season? Would love to attend and learn more about the program.
Now, why do this? Colleges rely heavily on summer camps to fund their coaching staff. Especially the smaller schools. So by you asking about a camp to attend- that’s essentially saying “hey let me give the program some money”- now maybe you attend the camp, maybe you don’t- but if the coach responds… all of a sudden you have an open line of messaging with him and can contact him when you get film from next season. If you do attend the camp you can message him again before the camp starts saying you’re coming. Message him after saying that you attended and enjoyed it. And then proceed to message him with your film from the season. While constantly uploading content to your X profile. It’s just more and more ways to get your name in front of a coach so he pays attention.
Take this how you’d like, but this is the best way to go about the process of DMing coaches in my eyes. Don’t send them spam, be a real person and make an effort to ask them about their camps and follow up with them. I think you will have a way higher success rate if you do this.
